Mystery Melon?

Can anyone tell me if this is a pumpkin or a melon?

I know that we'll figure it out soon enough, but I am excited about having pumpkins and melons at all. You see, WE DIDN'T PLANT ANY! We have the worst time with squash beetle that I had just given up. These melons came out of the ground where the compost bin was last summer. So, any one who guesses right I will share some pumpkin soup with in the fall. :)

  1. Looks like a pumpkin to me...we let some mystery seeds come up from the compost pile as well. Unfortunately we have ended up with mystery squash, cause I think they must have been something from the store, not my garden. We'll see if its edible. Othewise, it is so far ahead of the other stuff, it may serve as a distraction for the vines I want.

  2. I'd vote pumpkin too. We're pumpkin free this year but we have a baby cantaloupe that volunteered in the middle of the garden.

  3. I was thinking pumpkin, but wishing for watermelon! The leaf is a different color and shape than the ones that are obviously pumpkin, which got my hopes up.

    (sigh)

Is the phenomenon of compost pile pumpkins common then?
